Croydon HeartWorks Night 5

This Tuesday (22nd October) sees Night 5 of Croydon HeartWorks.

Our very own compere, Chris, steps into the first talk slot to discuss ‘Life Rules’ – expect some wry perceptions of life and a sideways look at mindfulness.

Next up we have John Tindall of the Yuan Centre. John will be talking about his recent visit to Ecuador where he worked with indigenous Amazonian people, teaching tai chi and acupuncture, and learning their shamanic and healing ways.

Music is by Gabriella and The Planets, who recently played the 100 Club in Oxford Street. Gabriella is a prolific songwriter who, as well as writing her own material, writes songs to order.

Croydon HeartWorks Night 4: Tuesday October 15th 7:30 at Matthews Yard

This week we have a fabulous evening of talks and music.

Mark Leonard, formerly of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, now championing mindfulness in organisations with The Mindfulness Exchange, will lead a short mindfulness workshop with time for questions.

Next up will be a short update from Alice Cretney on her Turf projects where she is looking for partners for a new gallery space in Croydon.

Risq Animasaun of Croydon BME (Black and Ethnic Minority) Forum will present a talk on cultural competence ie the way to empower people to confidently ask about each others’ differences.

Finally, Lotte Mullan, the exquisite singer-songwriter will join us from Suffolk to play and sing her beautiful folk/country songs.

Croydon HeartWorks Night 3: October 8th 7.30 at Matthews Yard

Come down to Matthews Yard this Tuesday for our continuing programme of talks on mindfulness and community, and a music section with a difference.

The mindfulness talk will be covered by Juliette Ruffer, Personal Trainer from Epsom, and member of the HeartWorks team. Juliette was previously a trainer at Waddon Leisure Centre. She has taken the mindfulness ideas on board and will demonstrate how they can be applied to fitness and exercise.

The community talk is by Joe Gray and Lucia Lanzalco of Croydon Urban Pioneers, in conversation with Vincent Lacovara, team leader of the Croydon Planning Department Placemaking team.

The music session this week will be Indian Classical, provided by Shuva Das (voice) and Jayesh Vadukul (tabla).

See you there!

Croydon Heartworks event: 1 October 2013

We had a fantastic response to our first event, and are very excited about our next evening of mindfulness, community, fun and music at Matthews Yard, Croydon.

We’re lucky enough to have a talk from Dr Tamara Russell on some of the science behind mindfulness, and how it can improve wellbeing and mental health. Tamara has studied and written about mindfulness, its affects on the brain and how it can promote wellbeing and mental health. She’s also developed her own Mind-body MOT programme of physical exercise and mindfulness, and has delivered courses all over the world.

Daisy Froud will be here too. She works for the AOC, an architectural practice focusing especially on engaging with the communities who’ll be affected by and involved in building and redevelopment projects. She’ll be talking about ways to engage communities in the processes of planning and architecting towns.

…And we’ve got music from geek punk band Fakebit Polytechnic, who make their own crazy instruments from discarded video games machines, and other bits and piece from junk markets.

As before, entry’s free – please bring a food donation for Fatima Koroma’s wonderful Community Food Store based here in Croydon.
